A keen runner as a teenager in his early 20s, Arnold Latey's life took a dramatic turn when a skiing accident resulted in a torn cruciate ligament and he took to cycling for rehabilitation. This rekindled a passion he had for bikes as a child and after joining a local cycling club he found he could outclimb much more experienced cyclists and won several local amateur races in the mountains around Calgary. Eagle-eyed European scouts spotted his abilities and he packed his bags and left Canada to start his career at the established Danish squad Cykelmyggen at the age of 23.
It was a risk to join Rotational Symmetry but the promise of team leadership and an intensive training programme persuaded the young climber to move to a base in England.
