In Belgium cycling is really big and with free weekends at school he started watching cycling with his friends. This interested him that much that he started riding himself near school. When older he joined a local cycling group. Unlike most people in this region he hated the steep, short hills in the area. Julien longed for longer, real climbs.

His career was mostly that of a helper, but he got the chance to prove himself worth at a few occasions. Julien did what was asked like a true sports men. He scored respectable positions at three classics of which the 2nd place at Ainet – Bruggen #26 is most memorable. When his best days were behind him, he moved to Celtic Wolves until his retirement in season 35. Soon after he got the offer to start as a trainer at the same team, something which Julien gladly accepted.
