The terrain has very few hills and practically it doesn't rise much as the biggest part is ridden alongside the river Tejo.
The start- and finish-line is in front of the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and it turns immediately towards the river. After reaching the Praça do Comércio, they go inland and up the Avenida da Liberdade until they reach the famous Praça do Marques de Pombal. That will be the highest point of the course. Then it is all the way back to the finish-line though small roads inside the city center. It is very technical, but there are usually very few injuries.
There are many famous winners in the past, but very few Portuguese had success here. Names like Jens Waesbergen (Cyklista), Matthias Drejbo (Telek@m) and even Jan-Joost Dussel (peddelen) signed their names as winners of this race. The first Portuguese Top9 was from Juancho Lorenzo (Equipo Easy On) back in the 10th edition. The whole city stopped that day!
