The race starts in the small city of Bähenden, located near the border with Iran and Uzbekistan, before heading south-east towards Hawdan Gechidi – a mountain pass between Turkmenistan and Iran. The mountain pass has a long and rich history that dates back to the days of the Silk Road. It is believed that it was much frequented by traders from across Central Asia and beyond, and its location made it a strategic point for trade and other activities.
The route is mostly flat until the final climb up to Hawdan Gechidi and is largely considered to favor a climber type of rider. Along the way riders will get to take in sights like Köpetdag Nature Reserve, Yomut Village and Ashgabat.
The landscape along this route is truly breathtaking. As riders make their way up to Hawdan Gechidi they’ll be confronted with stunning desert vistas that stretch off into the horizon as well as rocky outcrops that are sure to challenge the riders.
