In last season’s Race of the Minutemen, Lindfield Locknuts’ team leader Frederik Stephansen managed to win the sprint jersey and finish second on GC, without hitting top form. So for this season the plan was for him to be on top form for Minutemen #48.
Of course the problem here was that the mastermind of this plan was Locknuts’ Directeur Sportif SitsWithRemote. And sure enough he planned Stephansen’s buildup to the race so badly that Fred didn’t reach his peak in time. Total disaster.
Or so it seemed. But wait; Stephansen’s understudy, and the team’s leader before him Daniel Niedziela DID reach top form with hours to spare before the race, whereupon big Fred pledged to play Super Domestique (and second leadout) to his buddy Dan.
Six stages later, and Daniel cannot quite believe what he has achieved: stage wins in a sprint, a mountain stage and a TT, top ten in the other three stages, and winner of both the GC and sprint jerseys. After the presentation, and with champagne dripping from his casquette, a breathless Niedziela managed a few words for reporters.
“Somebody pinch me, this can’t be real. This was 100% down to the team, I’d have been nowhere without them. The DS recently brought in some veteran sprinters and I was fortunate to have an absolute legend in Kilby Proper dragging me towards the front in the finales. But I have to give my biggest shout-out to big Fred Stephansen. He was a giant in helping me over the hills and mountains, but also pulled a big shift in the leadout train. He has my support for as many more tours as he needs it.”
