Lindfield Locknuts only decided to enter last week's Tian-Shen Stone City Cup at quite short notice. They had missed it in the calendar and enrolled in some other 1-day races already. Nevertheless the decision was taken to send young all-rounder Daniel Niedziela to have a go at the event with the LL climbing team to support.
In Stage 1 (Atakent - Toshkent) the team's lack of sprinting power was shown up and Daniel only managed 40th place. The lack of points immediately meant this was going to be a struggle. Things improved in Stage 2 (Toshkent - Toshkent) when the strong climbers in the squad helped drag him to 4th place and into 9th on the General Classification.
But it was a huge surprise for everyone when the young Pole took out Stage 3 (Chirchiq - Qibray, the King Stage) and hauled himself just short of the podium in 4th place on the final GC. There was an extra surprise when some more prize money arrived and we found out Niedziela had won the Youth Classification! This is only semi-official, and Dan turns 25 in six days, but it will always be in his palmares.
Good fun.

A pitty that it is a result in his palmares, but no jersey.
