The Fight for Yellow
At 19:20 GMT, on Wednesday 20th of October 2010, the 4th Edition of the Volta ao Porto, the Zyte Division's premier race, begins. The Volta has traditionally been a well-contested race, full of riders who were capable of taking victories in the top Division. This year is no exception. Here's a round up of the potential Yellow Jersey winners.
Previous winners hoping for more success
Among the 120 strong field are two former winners, the evergreen Keegan Shiable (Team Kernow) and Oman star Yasir Sahir (Torreira).
Shiable looks to be a better rider than the one who won the inaugural Volta three seasons ago. The englishman has a stronger team behind him this time and he has three extra years of top division experience behind him. He will need this to win, a win that, at 33, would be his swan song.
The pressure is on Torreira to deliver results in what is their home Tour. Given the sponsors' and fans' expectations, especially given Sahir's victory two seasons ago, anything less that a GC podium would be seen as a disaster. The Portuguese team have made their intentions clear by leaving their talented sprinters at home, opting to select their best climbers in support of Sahir. Everyone in Portugal hopes that Sahir can recapture the | | form that made him a Top 10 rider.
The Other Contenders
One of the most exciting prospects for this, and possibly any recent tour, is Salim Wajeeh (Equipe 44), who will be hoping to make up for being overlooked as a Young Gun with some success here. The San Marino based rider is primarily a sprinter but also has an awesome all round ability. The question is whether the manager has the confidence to let him compete for the GC or will he be looking to cling onto the wheels of the cway train in pursuit of Green?
From one of the most exciting prospects to one of the most expensive. Many a jaw dropped when Norwegian outfit nrk outbid the might of high flyers Telek@m and CCFC for the signature of Darrel Randel. The former Gradient Levellers star had yet to podium before the big money move to nrk but team manager, Espen, has an eagle eye for talent. Randel, one of Season 14's Young Guns, has started the season in fine form, which looks ominous for his GC rivals.
Knut Pave (Team Wells) will be looking to put last year's disappointment behind him. He was well in contention until a crash on the individual time trial on Stage 5 ended his dream. Team Wells enter the Tour with a fine team but with Pave, Jørgsen and Young Gun, Shishkova, great support could turn into a battle for the captaincy.
Whatever happens during the six days in Porto, some things are certain - injuries, flat tyres, suprise wins and names etched forever into the history of OCM.
