Season 13 Awards – Dorsher gets his hands on Äme
by Tim Johnson, at 7/10-10 - 18:27 GMT

Berlin was the centre of the OCM universe last night as fans and journalists lined up to see the stars of OCM as they attended the Season 13 Awards ceremony. Berlin may well be the finishing point of OCM’s most important race, the Germany Tour, but it is also the home of last year’s Best Rider, Torben Sturmann, which is why the event was here. The Sturmannator was in attendance, along with his glamorous girlfriend, no doubt a result of becoming the pin-up boy of OCM following his award last season. Fergal Lemire was the Presenter for evening, the Englishman returning to face his previous rivals for the first time since his retirement this year. One lucky sprinter was also going to be presented with the new Fergal Lemire trophy for the season’s Best Sprinter.

  Dorsher double victory

It was Sterling Dorsher (FFL) who picked up the biggest award of the night for Season 13’s Best Rider. The award wasn’t much of a surprise for those in attendance but the Englishman accepted the Äme Anderberg Trophy with his normal grace and modesty. ‘On 10 seasons this is the first time I can say I’ve got Äme in my grasp. This award is dedicated to all those who’ve helped me – you know who you are’ was his concise acceptance speech. It’s been a sterling season for the ageing climber who probably has only 1 or 2 more seasons left in OCM. There were no major victories to his name over the season but 12 results and finishing the season at the top of the rankings speaks for itself. Dorsher beat Kyle Abston (CCFC) and Broderick Rimmer (Equipo Easy On) for the title. Both looked rather disappointed but both would be pleased by the end of the evening. Dorsher, unsurpringly, also picked up the award for Best Climber with a resurgent Ian Defley (Dodge) and Viggo Monsen (Team Whalers) in 2nd and 3rd.

Rimmer collects first of four team awards

The new silver statue of Fergal Lemire was the next award to be presented. Broderick Rimmer was the lucky man to get his hands on Fergie, and picked up the first of a staggering four awards for his Equipo Easy On team. The Bahamas rider was another to have an impressive season picking up 6 victories and 5th in the

World Championships. However, it was in Germany where he shined, winning the White jersey, coming 2nd in the Green Jersey competition and finishing 5th overall. Kyle Abston, once again, finished 2nd in an award, with Norwich – London winner, Jens Waerbergen, in 3rd. Rimmer was recognized in the very next award of the night, this time for Best Young rider. Rimmer dominated the voting in this category, which is unsurprisingly for a 25 year old who finished the season 2nd in the rankings. Susumu Miyazaki (Hommerts Cycling Team) finished 2nd and Patya Gordeyeva (Yuri Super Team) finishing 3rd for the second season in a row.

Abston makes it four for England

It was now time for the Green Goblin, Kyle Abston to make a double appearance. First he picked up the award for Best Cobbler after winning Belgium’s Tweedaagse van Antwerpen and coming 4th in the Roubaix Classic. Not renowned as a pure cobbler, the Englishman looked rather sheepish accepting the award. Leopold Istrate (scilian) finished 2nd in the this category and Fakhiri Abdel (Legia) in 3rd. Abston was then back to pick up his second award, this time fully deserved, for the Season’s Best Tour rider. After winning the Belgium Tour earlier in the season, he returned to Germany to defend his Green Jersey which he did, despite a hard battle with Broderick Rimmer. Susumu Miyazaki looked rather annoyed at picking up his second 2nd place of the night and Perm Tour winner Corwin Wyeth (Equipo Easy On) came 3rd.

  Japanese star loses his cool

Miyazaki’s surly expression didn’t last long, though, as he was then voted the Season’s Best Breakthrough rider. Voting was close in this category between him and Salim Wajeeh (Equipe 44) but the Japanese rider eventually came out on top. Miyazaki was fully deserving of an award after a season which contained a number of highs, most notably in the Tours. The award follows on from his Young Gun award last week.

Wajeeh came second again in the new award for the Best Rider outside the Top Division. With lawyers working day and night to gain the Syrian eligibility for this season’s Young Gun 3, it looks as the rider’s

has succumbed to bad timing. The award itself was picked up by Fabrizio Malta (Delfins Team), a previous Young Gun himself. After two seasons of outstanding results, which temporarily moved his team up to the top division, the Portuguese rider was a popular choice. The ‘win machine’, Roderick Soule, came in 3rd.

The Season’s Best Breakthrough team went to Dutch outfit, Toma Pro CST, after their speedy move up the rankings. For a team that has been in operation for only 6 months, this is an astounding achievement. Filippus Sijmonds and Lowie Batenburg, the two riders responsible for the team’s success, accepted the award on the team’s behalf. Other teams that were recognised for speedy rankings ascension were Team GER and Equipe 44.

Easy On extend OCM dominance to Season Awards

The final two awards of the night were presented to OCM’s most impressive team, Equipo Easy On. First, Gregory Levis was recognised as the Season’s Best Time-triallist, primarily for his time-trial wins in Perm and Germany. Klaus Naessens (FFL) was given 2nd place and World Champion, Lucas Olufsen, (ExploGen) 3rd.

Equipo Easy On then picked up the final award of the night for the Season’s Best Team, a category they completely dominated. skils’ stranglehold on this title was ended by finishing 2nd and CCFC finished 3rd for the second season in a row. EEO dominated OCM’s top division across most of the season, though did not actually claim the Number 1 spot until two thirds of the way into the season. A Tour Win, numerous one day victories and four awards at the end of the Season cap off a remarkable effort for the team that relocated to Germany this year. With the news that the team will soon be starting a climbing team, it will not be surprising if EEO stay at the top of the rankings for quite a while.

So, the Awards ceremony moves to England next season where we will hopefully be seeing Fergal Lemire again to present. With two Englishmen, Abston and Dorsher, currently on top of the rankings, will we be seeing the ceremony remain over here for a few seasons yet? Or will the Caribbean be the location of Season 15’s awards?

  Another great article.

Congrats to Dorsher for grabbing the highest award.

Last season Abston was ranked 1st most of the season, but had a "down" at the end of the season. He's back at 1st again now, but how typical is it that the awards were excactly when he was ranked 3rd :p
