  Preview Volta ao Porto

So after the deep GC favorites analysis and the deeper SC favorites analysis, it’s time to check which youngsters will line up at the start of the Tour in the Porto Streets on day 17 to fight for the YC.

On the 46 Seasons of history, many Heroes won the competition at the start of their careers. 12 out of the past 46 winners went along and won the GC, too, with 3 of them winning both competitions twice:
Maruyama Dai in ed. 14 and 15
   Lech Wi?ckowski in ed. 19 and 20.
Anastasio Marroquín in ed. 21 and 23

  The other GC+YC winners

were:
   Celso Leitão
   Joppe Marant
   Marcus Bøgh
   Mils Rodda
   Gaston Siller
   Orsino Lamattina
   Migueo Bernal
   Hugo Van Den Berg
   Baatar Ariuntungalag

This means that almost 1/3 of the Tours (32,6% to be exact) were won by a youngster. It’s time to take this analysis serious. Let’s jump right in.

The Edition 47 brings us 20 riders who can qualify to win the trophy.
5 of them are sprinters, 1 is a TTer, 1 is a hiller, 9 others have some climbing ability, but no TT skills, so this leaves us with 4 riders with a chance to win the competition, let’s check them out:

  Team WonderDee ( Bengt Granskog) - *****
Bengt was already referred as a dark horse for the GC fight (2 stars), but for the YC is completely different story. Here, he is a clear favorite as he’s the only rider who is TF ready and has the right set of skills for the Tour. Bengt will leave the ramp as the number one favorite to take the big prize home.

  Yuri SuperTeam ( Pascoal Baptista) - ****
Runner up last season, Pascoal comes back with yet another good chance to finish on the podium of the YC. The possibility to fight for the win, will depend on the liberty he’ll have inside the own team since Raimundo Frota was appointed as captain for the Tour.
  Ello Ello ( Jochim Donat) - ****
Henri Tolstokozhev is one of the managers that until now refused to put his cards on the table. Phongsavanh Phanvathvongsack is considered the top rider chosen by Henri to fight for the GC (4 stars), but the plans can easily change is Henri decides he prefers to go with Jochim for the YC. Who knows what’s on his head?

  Stroopwafel ( Miko?aj Zawada) - ***
Stroopwafel doesn’t bring the strongest climbing team, and neither is Miko?aj. Still, with the lack of competition, Miko?aj could get into the podium on the YC if his team decided to keep on pushing on the climbing stages. Will they do so, or focus mainly on the SC with Chris-George Buelens?

Granskog is not TF ready :(

Wow, I thought the trend was that YC's were getting more competitive.

Maybe also Hektor Jansson (CK Hymer) could play a role here, with decent TT skills and AV57, although being a sprinter.

You can add one to the list!
I saw the YC field and decided to do a mad F5 dash to give Giara a shot.
