One on One with the Don - Michael Johansson

Yes indeed, the awesome, legendary, absolutely fabulous One on One with The Don is back!
My first One on One is with a manager that has been at the top of the Ranks for many seasons. He has been a consistent performer with Jerry Grundin as captain not leaving the top5 since he was fully trained. He doesn’t visit the Forum that often though and that makes him not as well known as many other great managers. It’s Michael Johansson form Team Celeste!

Hi Michael, great to see you, it’s an absolute honour to do this interview with you. My first question is the usual one: Why did you start playing OCM?

A friend of mine spent a season competing in France. I guess he had a lot of spare time between training and races so he started a Cycling simulator team. When he returned home he made me start one too.
It took a year or so to pass him in the rankings...

Haha, was this down to you having to learn to play the game or was this friend of yours actually quite good at OCM? And also, is he jealous at your success right now? ;)

We were both in div 1 for some time so his team was also good. But I think he has given up lately, he scored very few points last season. He asked me how my team is doing last week , so he still shows some interest .
The rider ranking was never in focus when starting the team. Soon we started to strive for the national jersey and I believe at least 3 Celeste riders have been at the top of the Swedish ranking.

Now we're on the subject of how you're team is doing, as far as I can see, it is doing rather well. Did you ever imagine you would have a rider at #1 of the OCM Rank when you started? And has Grundin surprised you with his success or did you see it coming from the moment you saw his potential?

The rider ranking was never in focus when starting the team. Soon we started to strive for the national jersey and I believe at least 3 Celeste riders have been at the top of the Swedish ranking.
It was almost perfect timing when the youth programme discovered Jerry. We knew that this was a rider that could take some great victories. The team were already doing well in climber races and most infrastructure was in place for having a top team. Jerry did a few races in lower divisions but has races almost his entire career in the top division. Just as Jerry joined the team, I found Andre during a trip to Poland. They actually managed to reach the podium in the same race a few times.

Unfortunately Andre got injured a few times and struggled to produce results on his own. No doubt Andre and Benny have been important support for Jerry during large portions of his career.

The most amazing thing about Grundin is his incredibly consistent performance. He's not been outside the top-5 of the rankings since his first serious season. Do you think this is caused by his incredibly good support or are there other factors that could have their influence?

Who knows? Good rider, good team with more that 5 supporting riders and above all, no injuries so far. Knock on wood.

Haha, you can never be too cautious with that ;). Is Grundin your favourite rider becaus of these great seasons, or is there an other rider whom you have a soft spot for?

Of course Jerry is number one in most aspects aspects. Andre also has exceptional potential and it would be really nice if he could grab his national jersey.

Throughout you career as manager, what do you consider as your most valueable victory?
Besides picking up Jerry and Andre? Jerry's victory in Alpe D'Huez Classic was great, but Andre's victory in Zürich-Bern-Zürich was probably the best experience ever for the team. Did I mention that Jerry also joined that podium?

Now on to a slightly different subject. How do you see the future of your team, do you have talents coming up, or plans for some change?

We aim to continue being a great climber team, but we would like to be competetive in other terrains too. To achieve that, we will need to pick up a few more good and great riders. At the moment our trainers are trying to prepare Toma and Elijah to be able to get as far as possible. Time will tell if we have invested in good or superb talents.

Lots of managers want their squads to have a National theme these days. Are you persueing a goal of having as much Swedish riders as possible or do you just pick out the best suitable riders no mather what their nationality is?

Of course I would like to have a strong team based on Swedish riders, but it would be really hard to stay competetive. Sweden is a small country with a limited brunch of riders. I have seen others try but eventually give in.

Now where on the subject of other teams, do you have a team that was an example to you, or a team you like for other reasons?
Not really. In the beginning I looked a lot at Ck Hymer, since Marcus got me in to this. I

also looked at other Swedish top team and wondered why they were ahead of me

  10. During the most recent season there hasd been a lot of discussion about changes in Division1. As you've been in Div1 for the duration of those discussions, the obvious question (at least for me) is: how much have you noticed of these changes and do you like them?

In general I think most changes during the last seasons have been good changes even though not all of them have been beneficial for my team.
To be honest, I can't remember that many div 1 specific changes. I'm not sure if the 24 team change was good or necessary, but it did resolve the early sign up issue when it was introduced. The div 1 makeover was probably really good. I didn't have that deep knowledge about the race calendar prior to the change, so I can't really say how it did affect my team.

We’re nearing the end of our interview, I really need a Pizza at the moment, hungry as a horse. Is there something else you would like to share with the readers, like a tip, a funny remark, or anything special?
Play responsibly and enjoy the ride!

Choose the options you like best out of these:

  Training or Transfer?

Training. More constructive to build up than just to buy a product

  Tours or Classics?
Classics. I have had so many bad events in tours

  Germany or Vuelta?
Vuelta! TT to significant in Germany (at least last time)

  Forum or Chat?
  Forum asynchronous :-D

  The Awards or Jerseys/Trophies?
Awards, a litte extra over the results and statistics

  Staff or Equipment?
Perhaps Staff, at least possible to add the national flag

  Campelo or Longosiwa?
Two Great riders... I'd say Campelo if I have to choose

Real life or No Life? ;)
Both!? Riding in real lite is better, more real, more emotions, more pain. But I work hard on the 'no life' too

Once again thanks for letting me interview you, I’ve had a great time, I hope you liked it as well. All the best for the future!

Would you too like to be interviewed by The Don? Tough luck! Because The Don picks his victims at random, so you can’t do anything about it.
