Cymru Taith - A Review
by Yuri, at 6/2-12 - 15:48 GMT

The Prince of Wales is dead

Last year it was a clean sweep for the dark prince Slavomil Dittrich. How different it is this season. The field was not the strongest compared to other seasons, but WV de Dommel entered with big gun Ghidarcea winner of this same race two seasons ago and obviously one of the big favourites. From Saint Lucia The Doomsday Bunnies crossed the Atlantic with only one goal in mind getting Crusellas to the top spot in Cardiff. Ultrajectum had been planning for this tour ever since Pees Criem laid eyes on the young Wit Pelgrims.
They all couldn't have been more wrong!

  Welshpool - Bangor

From the start in Welshpool it looked like another day in the office for Ghidarcea. The terrain includes many tough and long hills and that is where he is best. It looked like a carbon copy from 2 seasons ago. Ghida enforcing his deadly pace to the peloton and on the last stretch see who could follow his effort. Wekenburg a surprise in this field was the first to let go, soon followed by Joselito Rangel (TKT) "good old" Cor Ooijer (canutes) and Jan Thomsen (blast). Only one who could cling on with the big three was a young swedish timetrialer Lasse Alkvist (Raleigh PPDB). No matter what Ghida tried he kept his wheel. Crusellas was the first to crack followed soon by the Pilgrim. Ghida could not get rid of this young Swede untill the last straight stretch. Alkvist lost but certainly did not concede.

  Newport ITT

Early starter Aquilino MourĂ£o (CycleMotor) was ahead of the field untill Thanassis Dadakos (mortenryt) passed him by a few seconds. It was looking good for mortenryt as all riders seem to fail surpassing his time. First one that launched an attack on his time was Crusellas, with loads of anger build up by the result of stage one he got superhuman powers, and he managed to beat Dadakos with

a few seconds to spare. Wit Pelgrim has never been a fan of time trials and he did allright with a top 9 classification. Then it was Alkvists turn, he knew that a good result would make him a contender for the final victory, and he did really well, claiming third place. Now the stadium got quiet, Ghida should have been in the stadium by now, what happened? It took almost 2 minutes before Ghida entered the velodrome shaking his head from side to side. He was hit by bad luck and had to stop during the TT for "a number 2". The General classification after stage 2 was a surprise: In his debut tour Lasse Alkvist leads before Damario Crusellas and Wit Pelgrims closely followed by Jordy Wekenburg. And Ghida? His bowel-movements made him drop to 10th overall. Now that is a surprise!

  Newport - Cardiff
The final stage is not what we would call a classic paraderace. Alkvist likes to ride alone and not in a dangerous peloton preparing for a sprint. Big favourite was Kristoph "The Villain" Villumsen and Darkwave Recordings kept the pace high so the chance on a breakaway was minimized. When the final straight was reached, Dehease and Thomsen (blast) made it a classic sprint between the fastest man in this field. However they had not taken in to account the mighty legs of Vidal Lizarraga who claimed top spot before Thomsen and the surprising Wit Portai.

  The Aftermath
Who would have guessed that a great timetrialist with some climbing skills was all it takes to win Cymru Taith. Next season a lot more of these riders are expected to join. All we can do is take off our hats and make a bow for Alkvist the new Prince of Wales. Crusellas and Pelgrims are Alkvists companions on the stage and they deserved it too. Hope to see you all next year in Welshpool for the 12th edition of this great race!

Wow, I did NOT expect this!

Alkvist is now also the new number 1 from Sweden. So he took 3 jerseys from this Tour :)

Very nice review, but I wouldn't say Portai is a surprise for the third stage. He took already the podium in a sprint in Germany Tour.
