In fact the race is flat with no more than a couple of hills separating the peloton from the start line and the finish line.
The race heads out towards Sion, following the Rhone very closely before the race turns around and heads back up the valley. The race at this point changes dramatically. The wind wips through the Rhone valley and at this point it turns from a head wind to a tail wind. Attacks will start to be launched as the days breakaway chances their luck.
The valley naturally climbs towards Brig and sprinters will need to be well protected by their team to have a chance at the finish. The course completes two circuits of Brig. The roads are narrow and the sharp turns give the advantage to the breakaway if they are still holding on to a narrow advantage but the course isn't too technical.
The finishing straight though is nice and wide and offers the chance for a fast finish. Despite the fast finish, the winner will be the one who can save their legs the best on the long flat roads of the Rhone valley.
