Many climbs, a sunny day and several attacks shaped the race in Aveiro - Penamacor (Stage 6 of Volta ao Porto). One after another, the riders tried to break away from the main group, though no one could succeed.
When the final climb was near, Team Crazy Downhillers and Gilberto Morais made sure no one could attack by setting a high tempo in the lead. At the end of the climb, only the strongest climbers were in front. With 1.5 kilometres to go, (Poker21) launched an attack, which Gilberto Morais (Torreira) and Chris Bauwens (Team Crazy Downhillers) easily countered.
Lionel Lefever lost Gilberto Morais's wheel when the sprint was launched, and Chris Bauwens had a close sprint with Gilberto Morais. Chris Bauwens was the fastest in the sprint, leaving Gilberto Morais only a few inches behind. Lionel Lefever, who had no power left for the sprint, secured his third place only 3 seconds later.
Chris Bauwens was happy for his efforts today. It was a tough day today, but with the result of it, it suddenly feels like nothing. I'm so happy I won today. I didn't expect it at all, said the pleased winner.
It's good to see Chris Bauwens fulfilling his ambitions winning this stage. He deserves the victory more than anyone else, said the proud manager of Team Crazy Downhillers, Rene Rasmussen, and continued: The team was a good support for him (Chris Bauwens) today, and he clearly proved his worth in the break away today.
Bauwens now leads the GC with 36 seconds down to Aksana Putin from Asymm Project, and 38 seconds to Willis Stilwell from Poker21. In the YC he leads with almost 2 minutes down to Alfeu Freitas from CycleMotor.
Now there is only 2 important stages left... A climb and a time trial. Can Bauwens keep it, so he will win this prestigious tour? Only time will tell...
