At the start of this season, Samuel Isley was promoted from California Mist's youth squad, into there full team having shown great promise. At youth level he has won a number of time trials, and also shown he can hang on with the pure climbers meaning he could be a tour contender in the future. It was for this reason California Mist invested in the young American.
Today in Italy, at Cima di Blockhaus TT (division 1) he first showed his promise as a professional cyclist. He was up against some of the very best riders in the world, and managed to take an 8th place finish come the end.
He was assigned an early start time, and went as well as he could. At the intermediate split time he was -18 seconds on the current leader on the road, and come the finish managed to take over a minute lead on the 19km course. He went into the hot seat, and despite some close calls he stayed there for much of the day. The final 24 riders were the strongest names on paper, and 7 of those went faster. Still, this is a marker he can now build on.
After the stage he said "I just knew I had to go out and ride my own time. When I crossed the line and was told I was leading, I was over the moon. Sitting in that seat, with all the media present is a nerve wracking experience, especially when riders who you expect to beat you fall just short. Of course I was always expecting to lose it come the end, but to be up there is amazing. I thank my team for the opportunity, and for them investing so much in me. I hope to deliver again soon for them, and hope this shows given more experience I will be amongst the best in the future."
Once the race was over, we immediately pushed him again and sent him on a training session in Italy. He is working on technique and we hope this makes him a better timetrialler in the long run. If all goes to plan, he will be leading us in Volta next year
