From Zürich, the largest city in the country, the riders head in a southern direction along the Zürichsee and the Vierwaldstättersee. After 60 kilometers of relatively easy riding, the terrain gets more mountainous, when the road starts traversing the Lepontine Alps. After 20 kilometers of climbing at a steady 4% gradient the riders arrive in Andermatt. Here starts the Gotthard Pass, which will take the peloton to a height of 2108 meters.
At the other side of the mountain, the Gotthard Pass becomes the Passo del San Gottardo, as we are now in the Italian speaking part of the country. Descending towards Airolo, the downhill specialists will get their first chance to put pressure on the faint-hearted. After a short climb between Prato Leventina and Dalpe, the road plunges downwards again at Chironico towards the Ticino river. 29 kilometers from the finish line the finale begins in Torricella-Taverne, where the route will veer away from the Ticino river and climb towards Arosio.
Here, the riders will dive down the Arosio di Sopra, or Great Wall of Arosio, as it is more commonly known. These 3.4 kilometers at -12.9% average will provide ample opportunity for the strongest downhill specialists among the leading riders to open a gap. After reaching the bottom of the hill it’s just 4 kilometers to go to the Riva Vincenzo Vela, where the sprint finish will overlook one of the most beautiful lakes on the planet, Lago Lugano.
