The tour starts near the beautiful Fagaras Citadel - a well conserved fortress that is unfortunately not so well known, in Romania or in the rest of the world. The itinerary takes the route to Brasov, and in Sercaia it turns north-east to Hoghiz. From there the peloton goes on E60 road to Sighisoara, passing by another wonderful fortress - Rupea Citadel. Unfortunately the peloton will probably not waste time here and will continue their race, making a detour through Viscri, a beautiful village that has impressed Charles, the Prince of Wales and which hosts one of the few UNESCO World heritage sites in this race - a fortified church that the riders will only have a second to glance at.
In the village Bunesti, the riders get back to E60 road and head to Sighisoara, passing by another fortress - the Peasant Citadel in Saschiz and another UNESCO protected fortified church. When they finally arrive in Sighisoara, the best preserved medieval town in the country, the riders will take no pleasure in this, because they will hit on a total of over 2,5 km of old cobble roads. It is however one of the best places for the crowds to stay: it is a wonderful city (another UNESCO World heritage site) and history surrounds you from everywhere.
For the final 50 km of the race, people will finally be able to concentrate on the sport event, even if the landscape is still pleasant there are no more landmarks, and the main events for the peloton will be the cobbled segments of almost 1 km in Dumbraveni and the finish in the medieval part of the city Medias.
Although there are no true climbs on this itinerary, the hilly landscape makes the riders go up and down a lot of times. That and the cobble road segments makes the Transylvania Tour best suited for all-rounder cyclists.
