This classic takes place on the most famous island of the Hawaiian archipelago – O’ahu. Going in southwest direction, the first climb of the day starts. It’s the longest ascent of the day with a length of almost five kilometers and a constant gradient of 5%. After an easy descent, the riders will reach Honolulu for the first time this day.
From Honolulu, we turn to a northeastern direction to Pearl City. It’s here that a hill zone looms up, with three short ascents following up each other quickly. None of them is very steep, but for riders who don’t climb very well, this could already be the end of their ambitions.
Turning back south in Wahiawa, the bunch will return to Pearl City. In contrast to the first time the riders passed this city, they will now have to climb some hills between Pearl City and Halawa. The most difficult one of these is Hapaki Hill, which could really hurt some riders with its average gradient of almost 7% and a length of 2.4 km.
The top of the last hill here is fifty kilometers away from the finish, so there’s time enough to come back in the peloton. The penultimate climb starts at 11 kilometers from the finish line, so for the riders whose sprint isn’t very good, this could be their chance to sneak away.
The classic will finish on top of a small hill of 2.5 kilometers, with the finish close to the National Memorial Cemetery. Though the biggest part isn’t that steep, the last 600 meters could cause some serious difficulties, with an average gradient of 7%. The sprinters will have to time their last jump very, very well to win this classic.
