A race known for the impressive crossing of the "Caramulinho" and ""Cabeço da Neve" mountains.
The difference between this race and the other mountainous races in Portugal, is that it won't be the climbs making the difference, but the downhills. The organizers carefully left the more technical and long roads along this mountains for the downhills. One thing is for sure, if you are too afraid to go downhill, or don't have the necessary technique for that speciality, you won't be successful in this race and you might even risk an injury while going down.
The race starts on the seashore in Tocha's beach and heads inland through the long flat roads from that region. The first 80 km are almost flat with some non-relevant hills. The difficult part of the race starts when we reach “Lousã” and the surrounding mountains. "Couratos" (4,9 km at 7%), "Moinho do Pisco" (5,6 km at 6%) and "Sobral" (8 km at 4%) come in quick succession starting to demolish the peloton. Each one of those climbs is followed by some very steep downhills.
With 35 km to the line we'll have the climb to "Cabeço da neve" (15 km at 3%). The downhill from this mountain is really frightening. 6 km at -20% with some 90º turns. Riders must be totally aware and have good decisions on where to place their bikes through this corners.
Time to climb once again, this time to "Caramulinho" (4 km at 5%). This is probably the best place to launch an attack since after the climb we'll have another very hard descend into the final climb to "Jueus" in Ermida. 4 km at 7% will be long enough for us to see lots of attacks with a completely broken peloton.
Paulo Mendes was the first portuguese rider winning this race. Who will join him in the history books?
