This classic alone can secure a successful season for any cobble expert and the names in the peloton is packed with top formed riders representing the best cobblers in the OCM world. With a 259 km stage profile scattered with pockets of cobblestones and small slopes, the Peloton is in for a treat as they begin the race in La Madeleine to finish in central Roubaix at Avénue des Nations Unies.
Along the route many notable sections will need to be ridden as for instance at Saint-Python or Vertain to Saint-Martin-sur-Écaillon but it is really at Trouée d’Arenberg that the group of likely winners will be formed. 2,4 kms of an extremely difficult cobblestone section followed by the Pont Gibus section from Wallers to Hélermes selects the strongest on the day. They will continue towards Mons-en-Pévèle for another test before the likely decisive 2,1 km stretch from Camphin-en-Pévèle to Carrefour de l’Arbre just 15 km away from the finish line.
Weather conditions, the set-up of the bike, energy supplies, strength and endurance and luck. All will come into play, when the riders decides whom will win the trophy of this spectacular classic.
