Shortly after emerging from Nairobi's suburbs the peloton will be tested with two short climbs well suited to punchy hill climbers. The imposing sight of Mount Kenya comes into view but remains in the distance during a leg-punishing ride further North. As the riders skirt the border of Kiangombe Forest Reserve an audience of migrating herbivores will see them begin the ascent up the foothills of Mount Kenya. The Batian peak of Mount Kenya at 5,199 metres will loom over them as only riders with strong legs will be able to keep the pace as the altitude builds and the temperature drops. The final climb separates the strong from the weak and only those with a great team, strong legs or a whole lot of good fortune will prosper here. The winner will have earned a long cool drink looking down over the Rift Valley.
