Coming early in the season, at day 9, the route can be wet from melting snow, and the temperature can be around the freezing point.
The riders will have to endure tough hills and technical stages on old cart tracks in the forests around Hamar.
The city is situated on the east side of Norway’s largest lake, Mjøsa, and was one of the host cities of the 1994 Winter Olympics. Famous for being a skate city, all the Olympic events held in the city were on ice, from figure skating to hockey. If it rains on the race day, old memories might come back as the riders will be put on skates on the muddy tracks on the route.
From the start in Hamar, the riders follow Mjøsa north, past Brummundal to Lillehammer. Here the riders take on the tracks of Norway’s largest mountain bike race, “Birken”, up to Sjujsøen at 810 meters above sea level. Going south back to Hamar, the routes takes the riders inland on small rough roads with gravels sections. Along with the steep hills, the technically condition of the roads should weed out all but the strongest of the bunch.
It would be a considerable surprise to see a large group fight it out back in Hamar for the finish. The flat and easy sprint on Hamar’s main street should test the fast twitch muscle fibers of the remaining few, and a well-earned win can be celebrated by the strongest of the day.
