It is set in Costa Rica as EEO started in OCM and was most successful under the Costa Rican flag. The slightly mountainous and decidedly hilly race profile would have suited EEO’s most successful rider in his days, Truman Vancil. However, Vancil did prefer races with more flat roads and a sprint as a finish.
The race starts in Golfito, a place on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast which is a special place for Eli, EEO’s manager (actually the reason for EEO being Costa Rican in the first place).
Starting on Golfito’s single airstrip cut into the jungle, the riders go through banana and pineapple plantations up to National Route 2 which leads them on a slightly uphill course past the lush tropical vegetation of Costa Rica. Having crossed the Grande de Térraba, the course follows its bed up into the mountains with a small detour to Potrero Grande. Leaving Route 2 occasionally into the foothills with moderate climbs and downhills, the riders go then westwards until they reach the town of San Isidro where the race finishes in a light climb.
The race is famous for the large numbers of spectators and its tropical heat at the start with a more moderate climate at the finish line. It is a true race for the puncheurs of the peloton who excel on hilly terrain and can do some serious climbing as well.
