Esperance is also home to the Cyclops wave, said to be the world's heaviest wave with massive amounts of water unloading on shallow reef.
From Esperance, the route travels northwards towards Norseman, the last major town in Western Australia before the South Australian border. The quest for gold led to the establishment of Norseman back in 1892, when gold was discovered by chance at nearby Lake Dundas.
The peloton will wind its way along the Coolgardie-Esperance highway, passing multiple nature reserves including Truslove Townsite and Salmon Gums. The roads are long, straight and flat, with typical outback shrubbery the only vegetation seen along the roadside.
The nature of the route lends itself to a bunch finish. When the lead out trains wind up, the technical abilities of the riders becomes the focus. Launching their sprinters in the final 200m, finding a clear path to open a powerful sprint will be the difference between a good sprinter and the winner. A great sprinter with good support should have no problem bringing home the win for his team.
