Downhill fans and gravity junkies from all over the world come to watch this unique race on the OCM calendar, as the riders warm up and try to focus on what is to come.
Starting at Mt Nebo village, the riders head off one by one towards Brisbane. 20 km of rolling descent down Mt Nebo road will provide a supreme test of nerves, bike handling, and faith in tire manufacturers! Usually this road is the domain of motorbikes and performance cars, today the only noise is the sound of freehubs spinning and fans cheering. Riders will reach speeds in excess of 80 km/hour in places as they flow through D'aguilar National Park. Hilly pinches along the way provide a chance to cool off the brakes, while anyone overcooking a corner will suddenly find themselves enrolled in flight school. A quick dash to the finish line as the Brisbane suburbs appear and the race is over, and the waiting game begins!
The scene at the finish line more resembles a party than a cycling race, and the top three nervously sit on the hot seat as more finishers stop the clock. Finally all the riders are down, happy to have survived today's event and ready to start the festivities. The podium kicks off the party with the traditional winner's beverage, a pint of Brisbane's finest golden lager, and the traditional podium challenge, who can empty their pint first? As always, it's a scene to remember at the D'aguilar Downhill.
