Read moreArad GP is a 84 km race which will take the peloton through the landscapes of Arad county, in the western part of Romania, right near the border with Hungary. The most interesting tourist attractions in the county (The Mures Valley Natural Park and the Zarand Mountains) can't be reached by bicycle but the organizers chose a quite interesting course, most of it in the rural area, and the finish in Arad, the 12th Romanian town in size, with more than 150.000 inhabitants.
The race starts in Covasant, where the organizers found an uphill side road going to the Cladova village - a stern test for the beginner riders in Division 10. The difference in altitude is almost 200 m - enough to make the cyclists sweat and to make them happy that there are no roads that cross the mountains in Arad county. Then, the peloton will probably regroup on the narrow route that follows Cladova Valley and goes to the Baratca village at 30 km from the start.
The race continues along the lovely Mures River, but not as expected to west, to Arad. Instead the riders have to go east to Radna and cross the river to the town Lipova, a town that is not famous for anything else than being on the Arad GP map.
After Lipova, the course is flat and uninteresting, There is a notable exception, when the town Arad is in sight the course again makes a detour to south, it crosses the newly constructed motorway that links Arad to the regional centre Timisoara, and only then gets back north. The end of the course takes place on the stadium of UT Arad, a football club with a rich history, including 6 national titles. This will give an excellent opportunity for local fans to remember the good old days and to cheer the brave cyclists as they pass the finish line.
