After a short ride alongside Lake Lucerne the peloton heads south. Soon, the street begins to rise and after a steep climb through the canyon of Schöllenen the riders will be happy that the profile flattens in the direction of Andermatt.
There is not much time to rest, as just after Andermatt the street gets steeper again, the next 10.7 kilometers are uphill until the riders reach the Oberalppass at an altitude of 2044 meters. No rider in the peleton would expect a lighthouse up there, but there is one. A red lighthouse was built in 2010, its only purpose is being a tourist attraction.
By this time of the race only the best climbers in the peloton are in the lead and they are soon riding mainly downhill through the beautiful mountain scenery towards Ems. The downhill demands a lot of technique from the riders, which makes it difficult to predict what type of rider finally will be on top of the podium in Ems.
