"We were not sure how prepared Gusto Tomko would be for Karpaty Tyr. It was really close, but we managed to trigger his top form," started to comment Pierre Mrazique after team Lokomotíva Zvolen returned from Ukraine. "Also other riders attended the tour for young riders in France, and they did not have enough time to fully recover." But as it turned out it was just enough, because Lokomotíva brought home a new addition to their palmares cabinet!
Now let the happy winner speak:
"Okay, stage one. It was for sprinters, so the main goal was not to lose too much. And with 2 seconds that was almost ideal.
Stage two was the first test of climbers, and Lars Kvalheim and his whole team looked really great, so I was glad to finish as a runner up. I had good legs, so I still was not convinced that we can do anything significant in this tour.
Stage three was where I thought we completely destroyed our chances, because we forgot our TT bikes at home, so we had to use the climbing ones. Good thing I lost only 41 seconds on Lars, who won his second stage.
But the king stage turned everything upside down. I ended up on podium again, but Lars must have had an off-day, because he lost almost a minute on me, and suddenly I was just 3 seconds behind him! Everything was to be decided in stage six.
Stage five was a transition. Lars and I rode side by side the whole time, and I was lucky again to have good legs here.
And then came that stage six. I was tired, but I saw that Lars was even more tired, as well as his whole team! I knew I had a chance. So I gave it my all, and not only I won that stage, but I also gained those precious seconds on Lars, and basically won the tour right there!
All we had to do then was to bring the jersey to the finish line of stage seven and I was surprised I had good legs again, so I managed to be in the front group of sprinters, and everything went smoothly. What I tour! Thanks to all my team mates for great support!"
"This jersey is one of the greatest achievements in the history of our team," added Pierre Mrazique, "and I still have to process the fact that we have it. But... If Magnus Gable did not attend this tour, we would have repeated the unbelievable feat from USA in season 65, when we brought home two jerseys with two different riders from one tour, because here Robbi Mesároš ended up second among the youngsters. But that only shows how improbable that feat was, and here let's just not be greedy, just be happy with what we achieved! Still absolutely amazing!"
