After the downfall of the empire, Utrecht gradually evolved as an important center for Christianity. This was due to the arrival of British and Irish missionaries around 700. The pope appointed their leader Willibrordus as bishop. As of today Utrecht is still called the ‘bishop’s city’ and the urban landscape of Utrecht reflects this. The city is still known for its large amount of medieval churches.
The timetrial starts adjacent to the imposing gothic Dom tower. The route continues alongside the Utrecht canals, leaving the city quite soon. The timetrial track remains completely flat. The riders ride small tarmac roads through the meadows and orchards of the Utrecht countryside. In the final kilometers they make a U-turn back to the city. The time trial finishes at the Neude square.
