TEAM BOBYN are sad to announce the retirement of long-time Climing domestique Boris Dmitriyev. A long-standing servant of the team and very much the unsung climbing lead-out for the more famous TB names such as Ivan Bugayev and more recently Artur Zhuravlyov.
Born in the Crimea in Evapatoria to a Crimea Tartar mother who made lovely samsa pies and a Russian bohemian artist father. who drew landscapes and drank absinthe. He spent his youth cycling the mountains and hills of the Crimea, joining local cycling teams but this all came crashing down folowing the Russian Invasion and his his family, despite his Russian roots never really subscribing to the mood of Russian fascism fled to Ukraine. Initially settling in Kyiv, he studied at Taras Shevchenko UNiversity but he felt more at home on the bike - and after a summer camp to the Carpathians with TB his was signed on academy terms at the tender age of 19 in S53.
His early years was spent as mountain batman under the TB expert downhiller Ivan Bugayev. He spent his time developing his techniqie and talent and honing his mountain climbing abilities - and fetching water and food for the rest of his teamates on races. Bugayev certainly valued his climbing protection during races and he quickly came to the notice of the Ukraine national team coach in S57 with his first riders for the National Team including a short stint at the CON and winning his first Comrade Cup title to boot.
It was not until S58, some 5 seasons into his career that Dmitiyev got his own chance with 2 D5 places. Despite a bright start he was never really able to sustain his performances and again he dropped under Bugayev's radar.
It is therefore not surprising that during Bugayev twlight years and retirement in S62 that Dmitiyev gained a greater prominece with his first (and only win) at the Honeymooners Climb - in which he was determined to win to give the romantic occassion to propose to his wife Tetyana in a memorable occassion for the rider and his teammates. His decent run of form continued the following year with a podium at the Conquista de Bohol.
It was during this transition that Dmitiyiev moved from under the radar and tutelege of Bugeyev to a trusted companion, teammate, workhorse and good friend to Artur Zhuravlyov (best man at his wedding).
Apart from a few places here and there, Dmitriyev was always a rider to give his all to his teammates and for the likes of Bugayev and Zhuravlyov their success was largely down to workrate and climbing ability that Dmitiyiev provided. As Bugayev stated - I could never have been as successful as I was without Boris. A case in point to his determination was during the Corazon tour in S60, despite an injury and a crash he still perisisted in finishing the race (in last place) to support his team.
He shall be sorely missed - but we're glad he is staying with us in the coaching team.
