“Let's start off this week with rounding up the week of TTs except of course for WTA who just love to feel special and had a sprint instead ;-).Starting off in division D with the TT that they just threw sections at, it must have been a spin the wheel numbered 1-9 because there is a little bit of everything! Who knew you could get cobbles in Bermuda! The winner of this race was Hoseas Andersen of Greenland and I’m sure there was partying so hard they broke the melting ice!”
“Moving on now to Division C in Vancouver where the TT was filled with apologies from the canadian broadcasters at the finish line,In fact I have it on good authority that everytime a rider crossed the line and didn’t set a fastest time the prime minister Justin Trudeau personally expressed his condolences. This race was won by Gerhardt Reymond of Switzerland who took the saying “Ger hard(t) or go home” to another level.”
“The race in Division B took place in Sweden and was a minorly hilly TT that took in the beautiful views of Sweden such as Forests,Forests and yet more Forests! The crowd was massive, I mean in height not in number of course(this is cycling we’re talking about) ;-). Martin Pimentel won the race causing celebrations in Portugal that raged on for days as they would be able to see their home heroes race their home race for the first time in forever!
Now time for an ad break!”
“Here at Starlynk Bermuda Money Transfer we understand that you want to make sure your money is secure, that’s why instead of investing we throw it into the atlantic ocean so nobody can ever access it!”
“And now to talk about WTA where they travelled to a different part of Scandinavia! The race took place in Denmark so it was a sprint to be won by a person who could withstand cold miserable weather without complaining. So who else but an Englishman | | could have won! Gavin Torrance won the race and was so happy he even smiled a little bit as he guzzled down a concerning amount of beer!.”
In India NT team news: Nothing has happened. tune in next week.
And now for a segment I am very excited about, we have all noticed the recent success of the American NT so I have arranged an interview with the NT manager speedy b where he will discuss being a national team manager and also discuss what I call the ‘American Revolution’ don’t worry my english friends there will be no waste of perfectly good tea this time!
What do you attribute to your NT success?
I think there are 2 factors. 1st being determination. Simply signing up for every race with the best possible riders you have (using the best riders for each race combined with Top form when available, good dp/rs, good team spirit, good XP, etc.) is really important if you want to compete.. So just using your absolute best leadouts/teammates you can. I have a spreadsheet that I made that helps me find the best suited riders skilleise, then I check all the secondary factors. 2nd factor being a whole lot of luck! Within the last 5 or so seasons, I've seen different national teams experiencing a lot of luck. Turns out this was the season for USA!
How does it feel to win at the highest level nationally?
It really feels amazing! USA isn't the highest top tier team roster-wise so even getting a podium would feel like a big accomplishment. I feel it will be awhile before the USA has this much success again so I am trying to cherish it. I also have lots of respect for the smaller countries who are competing at the same level. Really impressed by what they have accomplished. Timor-Leste, Burundi, Nambia, and New Zealand to name a few!
Who do you think has been crucial to your success? riders, managers etc
Oh man, The USA does actually have some very solid captains right now. Kerry Donovan has been
| | an amazing longtime climb captain who is aging out but still competing. Bill Wyatt is in his prime as an all-arounder and CL captain. Adrian Wynn is the new and upcoming CB captain. Loren Volpe isn't the greatest sprint captain but with well timed top form he has really stepped up this season. Been thankful to the managers of those riders and other important USA riders.
Also thankful for Dr. Love from Cokol Breakaway team and Bolt from Pom Wonderful for their national support! Id also like to thank any team that has trained and/or scouted American Riders.
What are your goals for the future?
With such a strong start to the season I would love to hold onto the lead and win this season's world tour. Will need some luck but who knows! Otherwise, hoping to establish a new generation of climbers for USA as almost all the top tier climbers are older than 34.
And finally is there any other things you’d like to add. Maybe some advice for some new people running national teams etc?
Yeah! Here's a few things!
- Try to train your own riders - see where there is a weakness on the national team and consider building your own personal team around that weakness. That allowed me to train up half of the current sprint squad for USA (with some luck)
- I highly recommend building out a spreadsheet to calculate who should captain each race and who should be the teammates. You might be surprised who is actually better to choose. I can explain more if wanted. I use this for every WT race.
- always check to see if riders are in top form (even riders you wouldn't usually use)
- there is no tactics in WT so choosing a teammate/leadouts should be done purely on the skills for a standard leadout or teammate. (As opposed to like a pace pacer that uses their CB, FR, & TQ skillsets)
- DP is important so consider that when choosing as well (plus XP, team spirit, age)
- have fun! It's a unique opportunity and I've been so thankful for it
