His approach to life made that he never really felt the urge to stand up and become famous as cyclist. Friends around him tell us that it lies in his background as Groninger, where people are born that keep to themselves and don't need much. His way of racing was simple too; if he felt good he tried to go solo on a steep climb, if not he just hid on the back of the peleton or enjoyed the scenery from behind the peleton.
This way of cycling prevented that he moved to the best teams in OCM even though he had the talent for it. Instead he started in the lower regions at Dutch based Ascalonian CT from which he made a move to the better 1 2 Cycle squad. His sense of adventure and the promise to be able to race the way he likes, brought him to Team Oasis in Iran.
His move to Iran, where he bought a house in Abyaneh, was his 'best decision' ever. It brought both him as Team Oasis decent results in division 1 and 2, but most of all alot more fulfilment. He has embraced the caring, simple lifestyle in the mountain retreat and only leaves the village for shopping or to train the Oasis riders in Natanz.
