Rytis was born into a very athletic family; His dad is a former center for the Lithuanian national basketball team and his mother had 3 gold from the Olympic in weight lifting. (NB! the Olympic comity withdrew the gold due to her abnormal facial hear). Hence, it was with great disappointment papa Sabonis saw his son growing up as skinny and short guy, that used all his spare time in the back yard grooming flowers and collecting butterflies. However, as all kids, Rytis finally reached puberty at aged 15 and got interested in a girl. The girl was the son of the cycling coach for Vilnius youth team, and therefore he joined the team to impress little ms Dalia. He quickly proved to be a huge athletic talent, and had some of the most explosive legs seen in Lithuania only beaten by his mother snatch of 350 lbs during the 78' Olympics.
Rytis raced 10 full seasons for Red Star, claiming YC in TvA, NL and GT. His biggest win was probably the sprint jersey of GT in season 17. Rytis also has a win in the Norwich-London classic, leaving only Helsinki GP as the race he hasn’t won (2nd s20,21,24). At the end of season 27, Rytis had racked up a total 81 results, including 23 wins for Red Star.
