Lloyd was a climbing prodigy, born in Clarens a small town in the Freestate. As small child, Lloyd used to cycle to close by Lesotho over the school holidays, where he would train on the many mountain passes.
Sani pass, still a dirt road was also no problem for Lloyd on his way back through Lesotho. As a student, Lloyd had a tenure at a South African team, but like most riders decided that his pro career would be fast tracked if he moved to Europe. A choice he would always look back on with great fondness.
Lloyd performed admirably in the division one classics, a man for the big stage he even managed a win in Critérium La Provence. Lloyd's had such high regard, that he even received an invitation to ride the famous Zürich-Bern-Zürich course twice in one season. As a pure climber, the time trials were a bit of an obstacle to Lloyd, but this didn't stop him from winning Perm YC and scoring a top 9 in Germany tour. A testimony to his abilities in the high mountains.
These days the retired farm boy at heart, lives in a small house overlooking a Fjord in Norway. It is from here that he operates the training academy for Joss, patiently waiting for the next great South African climber to knock on his door.
