The race starts in Baile Herculane, situated in the Cerna Valley. Baile Herculane is a spa used 2000 years ago (the Romans literally named it "Hercules' Baths" two millenia ago). If the riders have time to enjoy the surroundings, they will notice the hot waters and the beautiful scenery with gorges, cascades and spectacular rocks covered by small groups of the black pines specific for this area as they go along the valley to the north east and then start climbing to Godeanu village. The race starts at around 200m altitude, but by the time the riders reach the pass before Godeanu they have climbed around 700m. The route continues to Baia de Arama, a long and quite technical descent, and then to Targu Jiu - after a detour for a couple of short hills that will undoubtedly be an obstacle for certain riders.
The riders will bypass the town of Targu Jiu, home of the sculptural outdoor ensemble of Constantin Brancusi, famous modern Romanian sculptor born in the area who died in Paris. The ensemble includes the Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss and the Endless Column, monuments which were raised in honor of the many Romanian heroes who died in the first World War. Their target is finally in sight after another 45km when they reach the town of Novaci and start the infamous climb up the Transalpina. And it is indeed infamous - only the best climbers have any chance of succeeding here: 28km in length, with an average gradient of 6%, for a total of 1680m in altitude gain.
The winner of Trofeu de Transalpina will have the honour of finishing first on one of the few climbs in Romania that can rival any mountain stage race in the world.

Description
The terrain in Trofeu de Transalpina includes many steep and hard climbs and has only easy downhills. The terrain includes a few hills and has only a few flat roads. The finishinging climb of the stage is extremely steep and tough. It will push any rider to his limits. The route isn't technical at all.
