Spanning 185 km, the course winds through the windswept plains of northern France, offering a thrilling test of power, endurance, and bike-handling skills. This race is a dream for specialists and sprinters who can endure the rugged pavé.
The race begins in the heart of Dunkerque, a bustling port city with a famous history. The opening kilometers feature wide, exposed roads, where strong crosswinds off the North Sea can splinter the peloton into echelons. Early breakaways are likely to form here, but the real test begins as the riders hit the first cobbled sectors.
The course includes 14 cobbled sectors totaling over 25 km, ranging from short and sharp sections to longer, bone-rattling stretches. The iconic Secteur de Cassel, a 2.8 km stretch of uneven cobblestones, is tackled twice and features narrow roads that reward those who fight for position.
Midway through the race, riders face the Mont des Récollets, a short, cobbled climb with an average gradient of 5%, where attacks are likely to split the field. This sector, combined with the relentless pavé, will test even the most seasoned classics riders.
The final 40 km feature a series of rolling cobbled sections interspersed with flat roads, giving teams a chance to regroup and organize their sprint trains. The Secteur de Warhem, the last cobbled sector at 10 km to go, could prove decisive for any late attackers hoping to steal the glory.
The race concludes with flat sprint finish on Dunkerque’s Quai des Américains, a wide boulevard lined with cheering fans.
With its combination of flat terrain, punishing cobblestones, and coastal winds, the Dunkerque Classic is a race for the toughest riders. It’s a battle of power, tactics, and resilience, culminating in a finish on the storied streets of Dunkerque.
