Spanning 174 km, this race combines rolling hills and narrow country roads before finishing with a fast-paced finale in the bustling streets of Dublin. With its challenging terrain and unpredictable Irish weather, this race rewards aggressive riding and tactical brilliance.
The race begins in Mullagh, a small, picturesque town in County Cavan. Riders roll out along narrow, winding roads, immediately encountering the undulating terrain that defines this race. The opening kilometers are deceptively tough, with a series of short, sharp climbs that test the peloton’s rhythm and create early opportunities for breakaways.
As the route heads southeast, riders traverse the lush countryside of County Meath, passing through historic villages and quiet, rolling hills. The gradients are not long but come in quick succession, wearing down the legs as the peloton approaches the final third of the race.
Loughanlea Hill (4.5 km, 5.8% average gradient) is one of the longest climbs of the day, located early in the race. It’s a steady ascent that could see the first significant splits in the peloton.
Hill of Tara (2.8 km, 6% average gradient) is then an historic and scenic climb in County Meath, followed by Slane Hill (1.6 km, 8% average gradient), a short but steep climb near the halfway mark, where the peloton may thin out as attacks intensify.
The final 10 km take riders through the streets of Dublin, where the peloton will fight for position on wide, flat roads. The finish line is located along O’Connell Street, providing a grand and iconic backdrop for the sprint finish.
The route is a test of endurance, and tactical savvy. The rolling hills offer numerous opportunities for attacks, and breakaway riders will look to build a decisive gap in the middle sections of the race. However, the sprint-friendly final kilometers through Dublin give strong teams the chance to reel in any escapees and set up their fast men for victory.
The Mullagh to Dublin Challenge is a celebration of Ireland’s cycling heritage, blending its natural beauty, historic landmarks, and vibrant city atmosphere into one thrilling race. Whether it’s a hill climber, a breakaway specialist, or a sprinter who emerges victorious, this race is sure to deliver excitement from start to finish.
