The perfect place to start the 206 km long adventure, Hokio te Roto Wakatipu. On the route against Queenstown the peloton have to climb in total 1910 meters, and descending 2060 meters, a tough day on the bike.
There are a total of three climbs during the race. The hardest one is the last one. Where the riders have to climb from town Wanaka at 290 meters above sea level to the top of the Cardrona Valley at 1063 meters above sea level. Very few reach the bottom of the last climb with the front group. In the end, there's normally a sprint between 3 or 4 riders and you need to be on top of your form to be the winner in Queenstown.
Queenstown is situated on the shore line of Lake Wakatipu. It is at a relatively low altitude for a ski and snowboarding centre at 310 metres above sea level on the shores of the lake, but is nestled among mountains.
Lake Wakatipu with a length of 80 kilometres, it is New Zealand's longest lake, and, at 291 km2, its third largest. The lake is also very deep, its floor being below sea level, with a maximum depth of 380 metres
