Freiburg is a warm and typically sunny city attracting tourists visiting the black forest and is the centre of a famous wine-growing region. The name in German describes a fortified city of free people, founded as it was as a free market town. Sadly for the cyclists, the city will mark the end of an tough stage featuring long climbs and swooping descents and no time to relax and enjoy the scenery let alone sample any of the local wine.
The finishing climb on the Rosskopf just to the east of Freiburg is not the steepest climb of the stage, but after the previous ascents of the day, gaps will surely open and only the strongest climbers will compete for victory.
Some sprinters and time-triallists will simply be targeting survival today, though some will no doubt attempt an adventurous break away. The GC contenders however will be eyeing the stage as a crucial test and an opportunity to put in significant time into their rivals before the upcoming time trial.

Description
The terrain in Heidelberg - Freiburg includes many hard climbs and has hard downhills. The terrain includes a few hills and has no flat distances. The finishing of the stage is a very steep tough climb giving many possibilities for the best climbers in the peleton. The route isn't technical at all.
