Groningen prologue sets the scene for the whole of Nederlandse Tour, it is fast, flat and technical and gives a good indication as to which riders have arrived at the tour in good shape and the teams who will go on to fight for overall victory.
At only 4km, the prologue is short enough to reward powerful sprinters, but long enough that those with poor time trial ability will struggle to compete for victory. The route is a circular one around the leafy Noorderplantsoen just north of the famous university. Margins of victory are typically only a second or two. A strong performance here typically gives riders a great chance a respectable overall placing in the tour. Riders arriving at the tour short of their best shape or those who suffer with mechanical issues will find their general classification ambitions in the tour over before they’ve finished the 4km route.
