The previous day’s prologue will set the tone for the tour’s general classification contenders, but the second stage will demonstrate which sprinters are strongest and who has arrived in Netherlands with the best support.

The route runs directly south out of Groningen, skirting the German border. The riders will often have the wind at their backs. An early breakaway will likely form soon after leaving Groningen, but with so many fresh and strong sprint trains in the peloton the flat route will offer little respite for the break, who are likely to hear the whistle of the approaching peloton at their backs before the town signs for Hengelo appear. As the field head into Hengelo the pace will rise with sprint trains competing for the best line into the finish. The tree-lined Enschedesestraat will be the finishing straight and the sharp turn onto the straight requiring good technique and strong positioning. The best sprinters will fight for stage honours and the bonus seconds on offer for those lucky enough to celebrate a strong result.
