The only race set in the country of Cape Verde, the Grande Prémio do Barlavento is a race to fear. Set in the Barlavento Islands, with a population of around 70,000, the most portion is set in Santo Antão, with the riders passing a fair few climbs whilst there.

The big ones are the Gudo de Cavaleiro, standing at 1,810m tall, the Monte Tomé, standing at 1,863m tall, and the island's biggest, the mighty Topo da Coroa, coming in at 1,979m tall. Riders have to pass every climb to get past the stage, with sprints and flats throughout. The finale, inches away from the Pico da Cruz, is a combined sprint that separates the wheat from the chaff in the sweltering heat of Western Africa.
