The town is known as the birthplace of Jeen van der Berg, a lesser known skater, it's sailing school, it's monumental wind engine, and of course the finish of a local race, De Veenhoop Sprint (De Feanhoop Fluchfyts), a race which was established to compete with another Frysian race, de Leeuwarden Sprint
The race starts at the town of Grou, where it heads north for only 5 kilometres, then takes a sharp turn right which leads the rider into the national park "De Alde Feanen". The next town is Drachten, the second biggest town of Frysland, and next is Heerenveen, famous for its skating rink. In Heerenveen, the riders make a U-Turn and head back north, and then it's only two turns till the final sprint, which will lead them into the annual Veenhoop Festival for Skutsjesailors, which is coincedentally held at the same day.
