Overlooking the Washington Monument, the riders head in a northwesterly direction towards Rock Creek, a small branch of the mighty Potomac River. North along the meandering creek, the slightly undulating landscape and winding road won’t worry the time trial specialists, but will require the highest level of concentration.
After 18.5 kilometers the riders reach the first intermediate time check and leave the banks of Rock Creek and ride for Rock Creek Cemetery, where the half-way point is reached. For those that still have some life left in them, the route then takes a southern course. The second intermediate split near the train station, after 36.2 kilometers, will present the last opportunity to compare the times before the riders head for the final stretch of the race.
Reaching Capitol Hill after the 42 kilometers the fastest men on time trial bikes then go through America’s governmental center. After rounding the Capitol, they take Independence Avenue past the Smithsonian and then north towards the White House, finishing on Ellipse Road, near the Butt-Millet Memorial Fountain.
