The real Baykonur is nothing more than a few sheds in a mining area about 300km northeast of the Cosmodrome Baykonur. Just in case the Americans were set on getting to space first at all costs. Satpajev, where the race finishes, is a slightly bigger mining town. It even has a victory park outside of which the finish line is placed.
The route is nothing special, just steppe as far as the eye can see, except for all the mines. Finding the right Baykonur does require a certain amount of technique, as does not falling into old mine shafts. Any rider who gets to the start has a fairly good chance of winning.
