Going into the week with high hopes, but little expectations, it turned out to be a stunningly succesful seven days.
It all started with accidentally triggering the top form of Valerio Chaundry. Our homegrown woud-be superstar, who unfortunately did not reach his full potential, needed a target in sight to put his top form to good use.
Cue the second happy little accident. It so happened that the Men become Gods tour was coming up which had some juicy sprint stages ripe for the taking. Hoping for a podium spot somewhere, Valerio exceeded all expectations by winning the first two sprint stages, losing his lead out Tau John to an injury in the process. With the final race coming up, Michael Frisch from the Piano toddlers was trailing by just a couple points with his two second places in the first two sprint races.
The now four-men lead out train succeeded in delivering Valerio near to Michael Frisch in the all deciding third sprintrace. With an ultimate effort Valerio managed to finish in Michael's wake. The second place being enough to secure the sprinting classification and gain our team its first jersey!
Already overjoyed with the results, the pressure was off for the cobble team in La Coupe de la Soif Éternelle, where 36-year old Fitzgerald Kerwin was looking to shine once more. With an eleventh place finish in the first stage, it seemed like a podium finish was far from likely. Like an old diesel though, Fitzgerald was just ramping up. A fourth place finish in the second stage boosted him to the fifth position in the GC. Reaching his top gear at precisely the right time, he not only won the last stage, but achieved the second addition to our prize cabinet within a week.
Adding the Coupe de la Soif Éternelle and the sprinting jersey to our palmarès, matches the goals set for this new stint of the team. Until now, the goal was always scrounging all the points we could gather, leaving the trophy cabinet to be somewhat emptier than we would have liked. The following seasons, we will try to rectify that. We just have to figure out how to schedule these pesky top form regeneration cycles...
