 Going Global: The Belgian Bar Is Set Too High
Our scouts are keeping their frequent flyer miles up! After our Swedish excursion, they touched down in Belgium—the spiritual home of the Classics—to see if they could strike gold. They came back with Eddy De Kerper, a 22-year-old climber.
We took a long look at the file. Eddy has "Good" potential in Climbing, but with "Small" potential in everything else and a ceiling of only 170, the numbers just didn't add up for Team WonderDee. To break into the Belgian National Championship—a nation absolutely stacked with world-class talent—you need more than "good." You need to be a titan. So, we’re sending this one back and keeping the scouting van rolling.
The Belgian Powerhouse
Belgium in OCM isn't just a country; it’s a factory for cycling legends.
The Current Elite: The 1st Division is currently being bossed by Belgian outfits like Flanders Fields, Comfius, team dustin, and CARCYCL.
The Big Names: The leaderboard is currently a who’s-who of Belgian dominance. We’ve got the climbing machine Yves Wuets (Team Oasis) leading the charge, closely shadowed by the reigning ITT World Champion Andrez Morissen (Andeby). And, of course, the man who just broke our hearts in the Perm Tour, Yoeri De Vaddere (Malowe), is currently sitting in third.
Walking Through History
Looking at the all-time ranks, the sheer consistency of Belgian teams is staggering. Comfius sits atop the throne with a monstrous 183,716 points, with CARCYCL (124,758) trailing in second.
We also have to pay our respects to the icons who paved the way:
Thomas Van den Plas (Bytingsvik): The all-time points leader with 11,646.
Kristiaan De Mayer (Glory Days): The sprinter who defined an era.
Laurend Bourgois (WestPomeranian): A climber so feared he took down the Zürich-Bern-Zürich twice and conquered the Alpe d’Huez Classic once.
Talent Tracker: The Grind Continues
Steffen Tveit: Still riding high after his stellar performance in the Perm Tour. He’s the benchmark for what we’re trying to achieve with this "International Talents Only" project.
Kaji Sho: Kaji might not be grabbing the headlines, but he was a silent hero in the Perm Tour, putting in the work to help Steffen secure that stage win. He’s settling into his role as a crucial team player.
Nils Nordström: Big news here! Nils has officially maxed out his Climbing potential at 86. That’s a fantastic foundation to build on. He’s now shifted his focus to the hill skill to sharpen his punch.
Where are our scouts flying next? We've done Scandinavia, Japan, and now Belgium. Are they ready to head south to the Mediterranean, or should them look further afield?
