Five years since his last podium... Such a long time, but part-time Cap Podnieks grabbed silver today at the climbs of Veracruz - Puebla.
The race was dominated by a Team Sky-ish tempo set by Team Formand United that held all the way through. Only problem was the final sprint, where Podnieks got a little tired and ended up second.
- I felt super good today and knew my team mates were in a great shape. But didn't expect the podium so much. Our experienced super helper Teunis and the very young super domestique Helgesen especially showed shine today, Podnieks said.
Podnieks may not be remembered by so many readers, but he was one of the most promising allround U23 mountain riders around seven years ago. Also made famous by a legendary transfer scandal, where two teams claimed his signature, Podnieks quickly made headlines then.
But quality, luck and opportunities have lacked since. Until now.
- I was super satisfied that Mindaug Podnieks really bashed most of the peloton today in this allround CL race. Also a little surprised actually, because he has shown pretty disappointing results sometimes and it was really a chance I took making him Cap again today. But our super tasting EPO candies did their job, Ebbe Spas adds to the press.
