TEAM BOBYN are sad to announce the retirement of Makar "The Marker" Arshavin Downhill domestique specialist. Not a rider famed for his wins (he had none) or his valiant runners-up (he had none) or his tour races (none really) he was a vital cog in the Downhiller contingent of TB - famed for his unwavering support for his team captains particularly in tracking down and chasing downhill breaks during descents by oposing teams.
Born in the Fergana valley from a family of mixed Uzbek-Ukrainian-Russian and Crimea heritage. His family owned a watermelon estate and had some local prestige. Well educated he was also interested in cycling at an early age and joined local school cycling clubs and then the same when he went to University in Tashkent. Upon graduation and fearful of a military call-up he was spotted by Coach Mal from the Tashkent Browncoats who recommended the rider to fellow Uzbek Myatlev from TB and togethor they recommended the rider to TB who promptly saw value in the rider to augment their downhill unit and promptly signed him on academy terms.
Despite being on academy terms Asrhavin rarely raced in the U23 races and was thrust immediately into pro races at an earlyage predominately to provide downhill suport for the likes of Bugayev and Polischuk. As mentioned earlier Arshavin was famed for chasing down descent attacks.
His early years were standard as a domestique rider would go up until S59 when he talents become internationally recognised and he esecured his first ever cap for the Uzbek NT and his first place (a 6th at the Hai Van Pass). This was followed by some solid rides and the occassional placements for the rest of his career. Key highlights for Arshavin was in S61 when he was part of the Uzbek side that won the Comrade Cup and personally for the rider in S66 with two quality D4 placements he secured his highest ever ranking.
Not known for his wins, he was a valuable team player. Generally a quiet rider who likes to tender his wife's watermelons but with an almost dangerous devil-may-care hunter-prey approach on the decsents. He wil be sorely missed but we are pleased to announce that Arshavin will stay on a coach for the foreseeable future.
