One season after winning his first tour GC, Lindfield Locknuts’ leader Frederik Stephansen returned to Norway to try and hold onto his precious red jersey. His whole season was building to this and he hit peak form at just the right time. And the 30 year old needed it as mapei bianchi’s Finnish youngster Sippo Haapasalo put in a mighty effort, taking the youth classification into the bargain.
In the end two stage wins and a second place on the three big climbing stages were enough for the Great Dane to keep an eleven second advantage over Haapasalo and keep his Viking crown for another 90 days. Once the GC was safe, Stephansen helped lead out teammate Vaclovas Staliunas for 7th place on the final stage, a rare moment in the spotlight for the tireless leadout man.

Well a good chunk of the difference with last season seems to have been the ITT where teammates dont help anyway. Curious how your other TFs you saved will be utilized now :)
Thanks Silenzio and I’m glad you mentioned that. Yes, I did approach it differently. Last season all six riders were TF and this time just Frederik and one climbing domestique.
But - and it’s a big but - the margin of GC victory was eleven seconds which is way too close for comfort.
I’m not convinced that was better!
Little late, but congrats! Also nice to see that you approached the tour a little different than last season, and still got the job done!
Thanks MP…
Great work Sits!
Thanks virenque. The youngster scared us.
Congrats! Haapasalo had more luck than I dared to hope for, but Stephansen was just too strong.
