Bermudian sprinter Kilby Proper (37) has had a long and successful career, providing great sprint and leadout services for six teams over 417 races. Late in 2022 he was at CARO BIKE TEAM and assuming that a comfortable, restful retirement was close.
Then suddenly he was bought by a climbing team! Fortunately this was not too undignified for him as Lindfield Locknuts also brought in a few veteran leadout men to support him while their best climbers were on a recovery camp. A fifth place in Frederikshavn - Aalborg was his only top ten with the team but his biggest contribution was yet to come.
Kilby was surprised to be called up for the Race of the Minutemen tour, but as it turned out his selfless leadout work might well have made the difference in helping Daniel Niedziela to a GC/sprint double.
So in a few days Kilby will take his scrappy leadout to Alkmaar - Alkmaar before he can hang up his helmet at last. And will he get his hard earned rest? No, he is being kept as a trainer.
